\”Spencer\” Review

Spencer: Directed by Pablo Larraín. With Kristen Stewart, Timothy Spall, Jack Nielen, Freddie Spry. During her Christmas holidays with the royal family at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, England, Diana Spencer, struggling with mental health problems, decides to end her decade-long marriage to Prince Charles.

\”A fable from a true tragedy\”

Is she going crazy? who is she exactly? why is she always throwing up? who\’s the guy that she seems to hate so much? what\’s going on with that jacket? where did they film this, it\’s gorgeous! There\’s a million questions presented here (why is her old home left to decay in the shadow of the castle she\’s living in now?) but none of them are answered or even attempted to be answered, just plenty of long pondering camera passes over foggy exteriors and sterile interiors cluttered with the detritus of nearly a millennium of royalty. Kristen Stewart is the best part of this film, expertly playing the role she\’s given, but this isn\’t my type of movie. It has entirely way too many emotional moments with no emotional payoff, and from what I remember of Princess Diana\’s life, there was none to be disclosed, even in a fable as simple as this.
